Hurley Mat Case Studies
The Hurley Mat Company traditionally sold Luxo Link™ mats using leads generated from direct mail. Following the purchase of Hurley by Kleen-Tex, businesses in LaGrange, Georgia were targeted to develop a sales strategy using a field sales force. We discovered that rather than initially contacting the potential buyer “empty-handed’”, developing a “4 Part Sales Package” and then contacting the potential buyer was much more productive.
The technique for putting together this sales package is described in the “Luxo Link Sales Guide.”
1. Choose appropriate customer targets with whom you are familiar, such as a sales relationship or personal connection.
2. Take photos of the building entrance. Obtain readily available artwork from the internet or collateral materials. Email these items to Customer Service. ([email protected])
3. Customer Service will return the following: Luxo-Link artwork sketch, price quotation, and image of the entrance with the proposed artwork sketch inserted.
4. An appointment is then made with the potential buyer and the complete package is presented.
5. Make any additional edits to artwork and sizing as needed to close the sale.
6. Take a photograph of the installed mat to add to collection of satisfied customers.

Global Sports Bar recently opened. Without contacting the owner the before photo was taken and 6 x 4 size proposed. There was concern that the original artwork taken from the menu was too busy, but the Hurley art department was able to recreate the design. There was concern that the owner would not like the preliminary sketch, but when he saw it he immediately placed the order.

Take Away: A larger mat would have filled the doorway and presented the design better. In general, the larger the mat in relation to the building entrance the better it will look.

WellStar Medical – Main Entrance Mat Size: 10’ x 8’
Initially, three concepts were developed: The Main Entrance, The Emergency Entrance and the Employee Entrance. Then a meeting with the VP of Operations and two employees was held. They discussed the issues they have experienced with mats in the past, namely that they move under heavy traffic. All in attendance went to view the outdoor entrance and visualize how the mat would look in place. Kleen-Tex was told that the $2,000+ quotation exceeded their Maintenance Budget. No discount was offered. Several days later WellStar contacted Kleen-Tex to order the Entrance mat using their Floor Covering Budget.

Take Away: : To avoid presenting “too much information too soon” we think that only the most needed mat placement site should have a 4 Part Sales Package developed at the first meeting with the potential customer. It’s a good idea to have “before” to have observed and have photos of other likely sites to discuss after the principal mat placement has been considered. This approach will save time for you and the potential customer.
Follow Up: The LaGrange WellStar staff was considering ordering Hurley mats for the emergency and employee entrances but discovered that WellStar headquarters is developing a new logo. Kleen-Tex has been put in contact with the hospital chain’s Director of Communication and Sr. VP of Marketing. We will make a presentation highlighting the benefits of Hurley mats in Branding, Signage and Marketing discussions. We will ask asking to be involved in the roll out of the new logo.

Mat Size: 7’ x 3’
The entrance photo was taken from far back to capture the entire entrance view and was sent to Hurley with art work and suggested size. The 4 Part Sales Package was presented to the owner. The owner reviewed the sales package, walked outside to visualized how the mat would look and placed the order. The owner and the staff are very happy with the appearance and function of the mat and said that several customers have mentioned how good it looks. The owner said it “could have been a little bit bigger.”
Number of site visits: 2 Number of revisions: 1 Telephone calls: 0
Take Away: A 7’ x 4’ mat would have fit the entrance better than the 7’ x 3’ mat. It’s is best to start the discussion with the largest mat that looks great. In this case we proposed a mat that was not quite big enough to fit the need.

The “before” photo shows a local Center State branch that has a “mat well” with an old, worn out mat inserted. The mat well was 6 ¾ x 3 ¾. Preliminary artwork sketches were prepared using a “welcome” design and the bank’s logo. The regional manager was given the sketches and a quote. He chose the logo.
Site Visits: 3 Number of revisions: 2 Number of telephone calls: 4
Take Away: This was our first experience with inserting a Luxo Link into a mat well. We measured the mat well dimensions carefully – across the top, the bottom and down each side. The finished mat was installed without any trimming required.
PNC Bank

The “before” photo shows shows the need. The preliminary art sketch of the PNC logo in 6’4” x 6’4” was sent to Hurley and a 4 Part Sales Package was created. The Bank’s regional building manager said that PNC does use their logo on floor mats. Three other 4 Part Sales Packages were created – ; a plain mat and two “welcome” concepts. The branch manager liked the “welcome mats” but the regional manager approved the plain mat with a border It was ordered and installed. There have been positive comments made about how the mat fits in with the bank’s color scheme.
Site visits: 4 Revisions: 3 Telephone calls: 4
Take Away: We found that PNC does not have a policy against using their logo on floor mats. When PNC starts the reorder process for mats in their next fiscal year we will approach other branch offices and offer them the same concept.

This GM dealer had just completed building this facility. The building has several logos on it and we decided to suggest a “welcome” mat in size 12 x 6. When we had the 4Part Sales Package in hand we met the owner and walked to the front of the building to visualize how the mat would look. The owner liked the concept of using a “welcome” logo but asked us to use the font Chevrolet used on the building and reduce the size to 12 x 5. We revised the artwork and visited him again. He liked what he saw and gave us the order. He is very pleased with the mat and said it “fits the appearance of the entrance”.
Site visits: 3 Revisions: 1 Telephone calls: 3
Take Away: Today, GM sales facilities are being built with the same design and colors. The 12 x 5 looks great but the 12 x 6 would fit the building even better.
This same 4Part Sales Package might be effective at other GM facilities using this current building design.

This three store company recently developed a new logo. The brick circle design at this entrance limited the height of the mat to 4 feet. Hurley prepared a 4-Part Sales Package using a 6×4 size. We met an owner and walked outside to view the entrance and visualize how the mat would look. After reviewing the package with his brother he called placed the order. After the mat was installed they placed an order for the exact same design to go to a second location. When it is installed we hope to sell the same design to the third store.
